Monday to Thursday 6pm ONLY! Dir. Abbas Kiarostami - 2017 - 114m - Iran - No Matinees “Kiarostami represents the highest level of artistry in the cinema.” —Martin Scorsese For what would prove to be his final film, Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami gave himself a challenge: to create a dialogue between his work as a filmmaker and his work as a photographer, bridging the two art forms to which he had dedicated his life. Setting out to reconstruct the moments immediately before and after a photograph is taken, Kiarostami selected twenty-four still images—most of them stark landscapes inhabited only by foraging birds and other wildlife—and digitally animated them into subtly evolving four-and-a-half-minute vignettes, creating a series of poignant studies in movement, perception, and time. A sustained meditation on the process of image making, 24 Frames is a graceful and elegiac farewell from one of the giants of world cinema. “The chief pleasure of 24 Frames is how it attunes you to appreciate any movement, whether it's snow falling, waves crashing, or birds pecking the earth.” - Ben Sachs, Chicago Reader “24 Frames immediately communicates the power of the theater experience, in the way that so many of Kiarostami's movies can.” - David Sims, The Atlantic “In the seconds and minutes around the taking of a photograph, Kiarostami reminds us, the world changes, but mostly in increments.” - Scott Tobias, NPR “How fitting that this lovely final film is one that could be enjoyed by fourth-graders as easily as the most knowledgeable of Kiarostami's admirers.” - Godfrey Cheshire, RogerEbert.com “Kiarostami remained a tireless innovator right up to the end, and it's fitting that he leaves us with a work so singular as to be almost unclassifiable.” - Mike D'Angelo, AV Club There's an overwhelming consistency of imagery, process, and mood in 24 Frames, which makes the film feel very much like the considered work of a single artist.” - Stuart Klawans,The Nation THE GUILD CINEMA 3405 CENTRAL AVE. Friday to Monday 3:30, 8:15 Dir. Ali Soozandeh - 2017 - 96m - Germany, Austria - Farsi with English Subtitles In this gorgeously animated drama, the lives of several strong-willed women and a young musician intersect. Their stories reveal the hypocrisies of modern Iranian society, where sex, drugs, and corruption coexist with strict religious law. In the bustling metropolis of Tehran, avoiding prohibitions has become an everyday sport and breaking taboos can be a means of personal emancipation. Nevertheless, women invariably end up on the bottom rung of the social order. A young woman needs an operation to “restore” her virginity. A judge in the Islamic Revolutionary Court exhorts favors from a prostitute in exchange for a favorable ruling. The wife of an imprisoned drug addict is denied the divorce she needs in order to live independently. Making use of rotoscope animation, expat Iranian filmmaker Ali Soozandeh creates a portrait of contemporary Tehran that would be impossible by any other means. “A beautifully rotoscoped drama with intertwining stories set against the cognitively dissonant clash of Iran’s strict, theocratic society and the every-day realities of sex, drugs and corruption.” – Michael Ordona, Los Angeles Times “A spellbinding animated journey into the underbelly of Iranian society.” – E. Nina Rothe, The Huffington Post “Visually striking. This wily account of 20-something Iranians negotiating an assault course of laws and prohibitions to get their kicks fizzes with energy and bad behaviour.” – Wendy Ide, Screen International “An audacious debut. Explore[s] the highly charged theme of sexual and personal freedom in Iran without salaciousness.” – Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter “A transgressive explosion. Delivers a stunning penetration into the very disturbed hidden face of daily life in the Iranian capital.” – Fabien Lamercier, Cineuropa THE GUILD CINEMA 3405 CENTRAL AVE.
